[UM]English Grammar by Azar

English Grammar로 유명한 Azar 시리즈 입니다.

Grammar in Use 와 쌍벽을 이루는 문법책이죠. 한국에서는 GIU가 큰 인기를 끌고 있지만, 개인적으로는 Azar을 더 좋아합니다. 좀더 자세한 설명과 표현, 활용면에서 GIU보다 더 많은 도움을 받은 것 같네요. 현재 4/E(Fourth Edition)까지 나와있습니다.

Azar의 Grammar는 3단계로 구성되어 있습니다. 흔히 빨간, 검정, 파란책이라 불리죠.

Step 1. Basic

Step 2. Fundamentals of 

Step 3. Understanging and Using

가지고 있는 파란책의 내용입니다.

그림과 도표가 직관적이라 잘 이해가 됩니다. 특히 조동사 부분의 설명이 여태까지 본 책 중에 가장 깔끔했습니다.

한국에서는 교재로 GIU가 많이 쓰이지만, 미국이나 다른 나라에서는 Azar이 더 많이 쓰이는 것 같네요. 하지만 둘다 좋은 책인건 분명합니다.

 

난이도

Basic English Grammar < Basic Grammar in Use < Fundamentals of English Grammar < Grammar in Use Intermediate < Understanding and Using English Grammar < Advanced Grammar in Use

Understanding and Using 과정이라고 해도 한국의 수능 수준도 안된다는 사실…. Advanced Grammar in Use는 무척이나 어려운 단계라 일반인은 그 정도까지 필요가 없을 것 같습니다.

 

주로 미국 및 캐나다의 언어교육원(language school)에서 주로 사용됩니다. Azar 시리즈는 영어를 모국어로 쓰지 않는 나라의 학생들에게 영문법을 가르칠 때 사용하는 수업용 교재 쓰입니다. 그래서 그런지 연습문제가 무척이나 많고, 조금은 지루한 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 책에서 제시하는 문제들을 열심히, 인내심을 가지고 하다보면 어느샌가 자연스럽게 자기 입과 손에서 나오는 정확한 문법을 느낄 수 있을 것입니다. 

특히 Azar 시리즈는 시제 부분에 있어 무척이나 탁월한 설명을 보여줍니다.(위의 사진 참고)

Azar 시리즈가 문법을 암기식으로 만든다는 의견도 보았으나, 저 개인적으론 살짝 햇갈리는 문법들이 있을 때 책을 보면 적절한 예문이나 도표들이 있어 헷갈렸던 부분을 설명이 아니라 감각적으로 알게 되었던 경우가 많습니다.

GIU가 회화에 도움이 많이 된다면 Azar은 토익, 토플 등의 문법에 많은 도움이 될 것같네요.

Pronunciation is base of listening and speaking.

So, if you want to listen more or speak like native american, you have to know about position of  lip and tongue.
